Most online unit converters commit a major scientific mistake: they treat Newton-meters (N·m) and Joules (J) as a trivial, indiscriminate 1:1 conversion. In introductory classroom physics and real-world mechanical engineering, this causes dangerous misunderstandings.
While work and energy transfer do possess a 1:1 scalar relationship (1 N·m = 1 J), torque is not energy. Torque is a rotational moment vector. A bolt tightened to 100 N·m that does not turn performs exactly zero Joules of work.
